AUTUMN BREAKS IN CORNWALL: WHY IT'S THE BEST KEPT SECRET

LITTLE TREVOTHAN, LIZARD PENINSULA

Escape to the Lizard Peninsula this Autumn.  Enjoy quiet beaches, dog-friendly coastal walks, and peaceful stays at Little Trevothan Camping and Caravan Park near Coverack.

Coverack Harbour

When people imagine a Cornish holiday, summer usually steals the spotlight.  Think long days on the beach, ice creams by the harnour, and bustling coastal villages.  But ask any local or seasoned returning visitor and they will tell you the exact same secret that autumn is arguably the best time to experience Cornwall.

As the midsummer crowds head home the coastline transforms.  The sea holds onto its summer warmth, the coastal light turns golden as this stunning image of sunrise over Coverack shows, and the landscape settles into a deeply soothing rhythm.

If you are dreaming of an escape filled with crisp sea air, dramatic landscapes, and an unhurried pace of life, the Lizard Peninsula is ready to welcome you.

THE COAST FEELS LIKE YOUR OWN

One of the greatest luxuries of an autumn getaway is the feeling of space.  Destinations near us like Coverack, Kynance Cove, Kennack Sands and Lizard Point return to their natural serene state.

  • Uncrowded Paths: Walk the cliff edges without navigating around queues of walkers.
  • Leisurely Dining: Linger over a crab sandwich or cream tea in a local cafe without needing a reservation in advance.
  • Peaceful Beaches: Sit on the sand with little more than the sound of gentle waves for company - bliss.

It feels as though Cornwall takes a deep, relaxing breath after peak season, and autumn guests get the front-row seat.

PRIME WALKING WEATHER ALONG THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH

If you love exploring on foot, autumn offers ideal trekking conditions.

The South West Coast Path wraps around the entire Lizard Peninsula, offering stunning trails right from our doorstep.

  • Head North from Coverack towards Lowland Point
  • Then South towards Black Head, Kennack Sands and Lizard

Along these routes, autumn is prime time for wildlife watching. Keep a watch out for grey seals near the shore, migrating sea birds and coastal heathland's glorious orange and purple colours.

PAWS ON THE SAND: A HAVEN FOR DOG-FRIENDLY HOLIDAYS

Cornwall in autumn is a paradise for four-legged family members.

Many local beaches lift their seasonal summer dog restrictions in September, opening up miles of golden sand for unrestricted fetch games and paddling.  After a day of explorin ghidden coves and cliff paths, there is nothing better than returning to your accommodation with a tired, happy pup.  And if they are a bit sandy and need a wash, our doggy rinse station is waiting for them at Little Trevothan.

UNCOVER LIZARD PENINSULA'S CHARMING VILLAGES

Without summer traffic, exploring the picturesque villages scattered across the Lizard Peninsula really is a joy:

  • Coverack: Stroll along the ancient harbour wall, watch local fishermen haul in the day's catch, or enjoy fish and chips by the water.
  • Cadgwith Cove: Step back in time in this traditional thatched-cottage fishing village - sometimes fresh fish is available to buy too.
  • Mullion and St Keverne: Discover local bakeries, historic pubs with roaring fires and independent artisan shops.

Staying at Little Trevothan Camping and Caravan Park

Nestled just outside the picturesque village of Coverack, Little Trevothan Camping and Caravan Park is your ideal base camp for exploring the Lizard Peninsula.

We offer options tailored to every type of autumn traveller:

  • Spacious Camping and Touring Pitches: Fully equipped for crisp autumn nights under the stars.  Enjoy a firepit and toast some marshmallows!
  • Self Catering Static Holiday Caravans: Fully heated, cosy home from homes packed with modern comforts.

Little Trevothan Tip: September and October are ideal months at Little Trevothan.  The park is quieter.  There is room to spread out between pitches. The sea temperature is at it's highest peak after the months of summer sun we have had.  The walking conditions around Coverack are unmatched.

Distance
: 2 to 4 miles
Terrain: Sandy beach and undulating cliff paths
Beach Rules: East Beach is dog-friendly all year around. Seasonal restrictions apply on West Beach where they lift on 1st October (dogs allowed all day); restricted 10am to 6pm in July and August.
Kennack Sands offers an expansive sandy playground framed by dramatic rocky outcrops.  Outside of the summer peak, it becomes one of the finest dog-walking beaches in the region.
The cooler Autumn weather makes running on the sand comfortable for dogs, and you can easily extend your stroll by picking up the coastal path towards Cadgwith or Coverack.

Distance
: 5 miles round trip
Terrain: Rugged, steep steps, uneven rock paths
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
This is arguably the most breathtaking coastal walk on the LIzard Peninsula.  The route linking Kynance Cove to Lizard Point showcases serpentine rock formations, turquoise waters, and towering Atlantic cliffs.
Because the terrain is uneven with sudden drop-offs, sturdy footwear is essential, and energetic dogs should be kept safely on lead along tight cliff edges.

  • Highlights: Stop at Lizard Point.  This is mainland Britain's most southerly point.  Watch for seals before enjoying a dog-friendly treat at the Lizard Point cafes.

Distance:
 1.5 to 3 miles
Terrain: Steep narrow lanes, pebbled beach and coastal steps.
Vibe: Historic, cosy and sheltered
For a change of scenery, head to Cadgwith.  This working fishing village feels suspended in time with thatched cottages, colourful fishing boats resting on the beach and narrow winding roads.
You can take a gentle walk around the cove, watch the boats come in, or head up onto the coast path towards the Devil's Frying Pan (a dramatic collapsed ses cave).  Wrap up your walk with a bowl of fresh seafood and a quiet drink at the dog-friendly Cadgwith Cove Inn.

Short Weekend Break Away
Friendly, immaculate, beautiful, quiet are just a few words to describe this site. I'm sure there are lots more! I'll definitely be returning next year.

A Little Piece of Heaven
My 5th consecutive year at Little Trevothan and that should say it all. Clean, tidy, friendly and the owners are a joy to deal with. They have a separate play area for kids so no balls hitting your tent! There's a quiet time to cut out late noise. It's not Butlins, it's just peace and tranquility, and perfectly located for getting about.

Tranquil and Well Run Site
Our third stay at this site. Two great fields for our dog to run around. Excellent holiday caravan which is dog friendly. Everything you need is here, quiet, lovely external decking area. Will come again. It is a great location.

Julie October 2026

Excellent Site with Everything you Need
Very hiker-friendly site with all the facilities you need on a tough hike on the coast path. Spotless facilities, plenty of showers, loos, washing up sinks and a laundry. Lots of helpful details such as washing line, little shop, device charging and lovely well looked after level pitches. Really kind touches were providing me with a table and chair, as a backpacker these little luxuries make a huge difference. It is close to the coast path and you pass another campsite, but I felt it was worth a little extra walk for such a lovely stay.

Absolutely Amazing Camping
Absolutely lovely place. Small camping with large, flat pitches. Very quiet, clean toilets, big washing up area and launderette. Nice playground. Fire pits and barbecues allowed. Shop available on site. Staff friendly and helpful. Perfect location for sightseeing - fairly close to popular tourist destinations.
