DOG FRIENDLY WALKS ON THE LIZARD PENINSULA / AUTUMN GUIDE
Discover the best dog-friendly walks on the Lizard Peninsula this Autumn, from Coverack and Kennack Sands to Kynance Cove and Lizard Point
If your dog could choose the perfect holiday destination, the Lizard Peninsula would probably sit right at the top of their list.
There are miles of dramatic coastal paths to explore, quiet country lanes, sheltered sandy coves, and endless new scents around every corner. When Autumn arrives, this southern tip of Cornwall becomes even more appealing for a four-legged getaway.
The peak summer crowds have faded, the temperatures are ideal for active dogs, and the coastline takes on a tranquil, golden beauty. If you are planning a dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall this Autumn, here are our top recommended walks around the Lizard Peninsula.
COVERACK HARBOUR TO THE SOUTH WEST COAST PATH
Distance: Flexible (1 to 3 miles)
Terrain: Paved harbour paths leading to grassy, rocky coastal tracks
Off-Lead Friendly: In designated open coastal areas (keep leads handy near harbour walls and roads).
One of the easiest places to begin exploring is right here in Coverack. Joining sections of the South West Coast Path directly from the harbour offers sweeping views across Chynalls Point and out to sea.
It is an ideal warm-up walk featuring a mix of rocky shorelines, grassy cliffs, and woodland fringes. Autumn brings crisp air and brilliant coastal light, making it a peaceful route compared to the busy summer months.
- Local Dog-Friendly Stops: Grab an outdoor coffee or warm bite at Brenda's Beach Cafe or a pint at the Paris Hotel after your walk - both welcome dogs warmly.
- A Little Gem: We recommend visiting the Terence Coventry Sculpture Park. Almost hidden behind the coast path you will come across amazing sculptures in a serene setting.
KENNACK SANDS AND COASTAL TRACKS
Distance: 2 to 4 miles
Terrain: Sandy beach and undulating cliff paths
Beach Rules: East Beach is dog-friendly all year around. Seasonal restrictions apply on West Beach where they lift on 1st October (dogs allowed all day); restricted 10am to 6pm in July and August.Kennack Sands offers an expansive sandy playground framed by dramatic rocky outcrops. Outside of the summer peak, it becomes one of the finest dog-walking beaches in the region.
The cooler Autumn weather makes running on the sand comfortable for dogs, and you can easily extend your stroll by picking up the coastal path towards Cadgwith or Coverack.
KYNANCE COVE TO LIZARD POINT
Distance: 5 miles round trip
Terrain: Rugged, steep steps, uneven rock paths
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
This is arguably the most breathtaking coastal walk on the LIzard Peninsula. The route linking Kynance Cove to Lizard Point showcases serpentine rock formations, turquoise waters, and towering Atlantic cliffs.
Because the terrain is uneven with sudden drop-offs, sturdy footwear is essential, and energetic dogs should be kept safely on lead along tight cliff edges.
- Highlights: Stop at Lizard Point. This is mainland Britain's most southerly point. Watch for seals before enjoying a dog-friendly treat at the Lizard Point cafes.
CADGWITH FISHING VILLAGE STROLL
Distance: 1.5 to 3 miles
Terrain: Steep narrow lanes, pebbled beach and coastal steps.
Vibe: Historic, cosy and sheltered
For a change of scenery, head to Cadgwith. This working fishing village feels suspended in time with thatched cottages, colourful fishing boats resting on the beach and narrow winding roads.
You can take a gentle walk around the cove, watch the boats come in, or head up onto the coast path towards the Devil's Frying Pan (a dramatic collapsed ses cave). Wrap up your walk with a bowl of fresh seafood and a quiet drink at the dog-friendly Cadgwith Cove Inn.
